Two players lead offensive categories
The Netherlands Softball Team has qualified for the Play-Ofs of the ISF Women's World Championship for the third consecutive time.
After qualificiations in 2010 (Venezuela) and 2012 (Canada), the Dutch Softbal Team again belongs to the top-8 of the international softball-world.
Tonight (Thursday, August 21), on Day 7 of the World Championship in Haarlem, the Dutch Team shutout Botswana 12-0 to close preliminary play in Group B to improve its record to 4-3.
Earlier in the day, the clinching of the Orange team already was secured when Chinese Taipei defeated Great Britain.
Ginger de Weert went the distance against Botswana and struckout 10 batters, while giving up one basehit.
The Dutch Team collected nine basehits, including two by Britt Vonk, Virginie Anneveld and Merel Oosterveld.
After tonight's game Britt and Virginie now lead an offensive category in this tournament.
Virginie went 2-for-2 and now leads the event with 11 basehits.
Britt scored three runs tonight to bring her total to a tournament-leading nine.
The Orange squad opens the Championship Round on Friday-evening at 6 PM against China.
Ginger de Weert went the distance for the Orange squad and struckout 10 of the 13 batters she faced tonight.
Ginger struckout the first six batters she faced.
After having retired eight batters in a row, her Perfect Game ended when Pauline Tukisi singled down the rightfield-line with two outs in the bottom of the third inning.
She was to be the lone baserunner for Botswana.
The Dutch Team opened the score with three runs in the first inning, which began with three errors of the Botswana-defense.
Lead-off hitter Britt Vonk reached on an error and scored on a throwing error that followed a single by Chantal Versluis.
Hereafter, Jessie van Aalst walked, then stole second base, which was followed by a throwing error, enabling Chantal to score.
A single by Virginie Anneveld brought in Jessie to make it 3-0.
Five runs were added in the second inning.
Merel Oosterveld led off with a walk and Britt Vonk singled.
The two advanced on a double-steal, then scored on two seperate wild pitches.
Chantal Versluis (walk) later scored on another RBI-single by Virginie Anneveld.
After a pitching change, Saskia Kosterink (walk) scored on a passed ball and Virginie scored on a grounder by Dinet Oosting.
A 4-run rally followed in the third inning.
Nathalie Timmermans walked and Merel Oosterveld singled, then both scored on a triple by Britt Vonk, who later scored on a single by Jessie van Aalst.
Eva Voortman, who walked as pinch-hitter, scored the fourth run in this at bat on a basesloaded walk for Dinet Oosting.
The Botswanese defense prevented more runs in the fourth inning.
With runners on second and third base, a line drive by pinch-hitter Anne Blaauwgeers was caught and led to a double play, the second Botswana had made in this game.
After the game, the groundscrew was asked onto the field and they were thanked by the Dutch Team for their hard work the last days.
All members of the groundscrew were presented with some gifts.
Also, the Dutch Team donated a bag with all kinds of equipment to the team of Botswana.
Before the game, a cheque was presented to Right To Play, the charity organization of which the Netherlands Softball Team is an ambassador.
