Dutch Team beats Taipei to write history!

Nederlandse tekst

WHITEHORSE, Yukon (Canada) - The Dutch National Softball Team opened the Play-Offs of the World Championship in Whitehorse on Friday, July 20 with a 4-3 victory vs. Chinese Taipei in a game with a suspenseful ending. With the win, the Dutch Team wrote history as it became only the second time that a Dutch Softball Team advanced to the next round in the Play-Offs.

With this, the squad will not finish lower than sixth place, which is the best result ever in Dutch softball-history. On Saturday, the Orange now will meet Canada, which lost 4-2 against the USA. This game starts at 12:00 PM local (9 PM Dutch time).

All 66 games from the ISF XIII Women’s World Championship will be webstreamed live. Games will be recorded and archived for on-demand viewing as well. The games can be viewed on www.sportscanada.tv.

The Dutch Team got on base in both the first and second inning, but opened the score in the third at bat. Nathalie Timmermans then led of with a double and advanced when an error was made on a sac-bunt by Anne Blaauwgeers. The bases were then loaded when Nathalie Gosewehr walked. Hereafter, two sacrifice flies followed, hit by Chantal Versluis and Britt Vonk to put the Dutch ahead, 2-0.

In the fourth inning two runners stranded at second and third base, but in the fifth the lead was doubled. Nathalie Gosewehr led off with a walk and, with one out, the bases got loaded when Britt Vonk singled and Saskia Kosterink walked. After a pitching change, a run was scored when Virginie Anneveld singled, which was followed by a sac-fly by Merel Oosterveld that made it 4-0.

Dutch starter Lindsey Meadows retired the first 10 batters in a row, then gave up her first basehit in the fourth inning, but two outs followed. In the fifth inning, Taipei stranded a runner at third base.

And then the suspense started. With an appararent comfortable 4-0 lead, the bottom of the sixth inning began. A lead-off double was followed by a passed ball and an error that led to the first run for Taipei. Another double followed and hereafter, Rebecca Soumeru took over the pitching. An error led to a runner at first base and a wild pitch made it a 4-2 score. With one out, a single narrowed the lead to only 4-3. Another single followed, but the second out was registered with a flyout to rightfield. With runners on first and second base, Rebecca closed the nerve-wrecking inning herself with a strikeout.

In the seventh inning, Rebecca retired the side and thus the Dutch won 4-3 to advance to the next game.
