WHITEHORSE, Yukon (Canada) - The Dutch National Softbal Team on Thursday, July 19, trailed 1-0 after the first inning, but turned the game around and won comfortably with a 7-1 score against Puerto Rico to claim third place in their pool. Virginie Anneveld hit a 3-run homerun, scored twice and had four RBI's, while starting pitcher Dagmar Bloeming gave up only three hits in five innings, before being relieved by Rebecca Soumeru, who gave up only more basehit.

With the win, the Orange will start the Play-Offs on Friday against the number four placed team from Pool B, which is Chinese Taipei, whom the Dutch beat in an exhibition game before the event. The game starts at 12:00 PM local time (9 PM Dutch time).

On another sunny day, the Dutch squad was facing an 1-0 deficit after the first inning, but came on top in the third at bat.

Dutch starter Dagmar Bloeming gave up a bunt-single to lead-off batter Aisha Figueroa, who then stole second base and moved on a sac-bunt to get to third base quickly. After being kept at third base on a following grounder, Figueroa scored when Aleimalee Lopez followed with a single. The next batter reached on an error, but then a flyout ended the at bat.

In the second inning, Dagmar gave up a 2-out bunt-single and made a throwing error, enabling the runner to advance to second base. But she stranded there, as a flyout followed. In the third, Dagmar retired the side.

The Dutch Team also got on base in the first two innings, but then was unable to score. In the first, Britt Vonk singled with two outs, but stranded. In the second, three runners were left behind. With one out, Merel Oosterveld and Karin Tuk singled, then the bases got loaded when Nathalie Timmermans walked. But unfortunately, a strikeout and force out followed.

But then the Orange struck in the third inning. Meike Witteveen led off with a single. Next, a 10-minute discussion followed after Britt Vonk flied out to centerfield. The Puerto Rican coaches stated that Meike had missed tagging second base on her way back to first base after the flyout. The umpiring crew came together and decided that Meike didn't do anything wrong. During the discussion, the Puerto Rican Head Coach was ejected. With one out, Saskia Kosterink was hit by a pitch. Next, Virginie Anneveld drilled the ball into the rightfield-corner for a 3-run inside-the-park-homerun to make it 3-1. This was Virginie's second homerun in the tournament. After a groundout, Karin Tuk was hit by a pitch, but was left at first base.

Dagmar Bloeming then retired the side again in the bottom of the fourth inning, including two strikeouts.

The Orange then added another run in the fifth inning and again Virginie Anneveld was involved. With two outs, Virginie singled, then scored when an error was made by the centerfielder on a fly by Merel Oosterveld. Next, Karin Tuk was walked intentionally, but a strikeout ended the at bat.

A 3-run rally then followed in the sixth inning. Anne Blaauwgeers led off with a walk and moved to third base on a sac-bunt by Nathalie Gosewehr. Anne then scored on a throwing error to home by the short stop on a grounder by Meike Witteveen. After a pitching change, Britt Vonk walked. Next, Meike was forced out on a grounder by Saskia Kosterink. A throwing error then enabled Britt to score and Virginie Anneveld followed with an RBI-single to bring in Saskia and lift the score to a commanding 7-1 lead. Virginie went 3-for-4, scored twice and had four RBI's.

In the top of the seventh inning, Anne Blaauwgeers was on first base with two outs when Nathalie Gosewehr drove the ball into deep rightfield, but there Jessica Melendez caught the ball just in front of the fence.

After giving up the run in the first inning, the Dutch Team didn't ran into problems again in the remainder of the game. Dagmar Bloeming added another one-two-three inning in the fifth, meaning she had retired he last 10 batters she faced and 13 of the last 14. In the sixth inning, Rebecca Soumeru took over and began with a strikeout. With two outs and a runner on first base, batter Nicole Osterman hit a foul-homerun into leftfield, but then struckout to end the at bat. In the seventh, Rebecca added two more strikeouts after giving up a lead-off single. When an error led to a second runner, a flyout ended the game.

After the game, the players and staff enjoyed a barbecue with the parents on th campground where the Oosterveld, Versluis and Bloeming-families stay and the Blaauwgeers-family has a cabin.
