Dutch Team wins crucial game vs. Venezuela; approaches Play-Offs

Nederlandse tekst

WHITEHORSE, Yukon (Canada) - The Duch National Sofball Team on Monday, July 16, registered an important 5-1 victory in a crucial game against Venezuela on Day 4 of the World Championship in Whitehorse. The win was accomplished on three homeruns.

The team now has won three of its four games played and is closing in on clinching a spot in the Play-Offs. The Orange have three games left in the preliminary round. On Tuesday, the team faces South Africa, to be followed with games against the USA and Puerto Rico.

All 66 games from the ISF XIII Women’s World Championship will be webstreamed live. Games will be recorded and archived for on-demand viewing as well. The games can be viewed on www.sportscanada.tv.

On a rainy Monday-morning, the Dutch Team faced Venezuela, which has proven to be an unpredictable and therefore tough opponent the last few years when both teams met. Today, the game went the Dutch way from beginning till the end, resulting in a crucial 5-1 victory, despite being outhit 8-5.

The Orange started and ended the game with a BANG! In the first inning, Nathalie Gosewehr led off with a walk and advanced on a following sac-bunt by Meike Witteveen. Britt Vonk then followed with a 2-run homerun to put the Dutch on top quickly.

In the home of the first inning, starter Dagmar Bloeming gave up an one-out double, but then a flyout and groundout followed.

The Dutch Team immediately took more distance by adding two runs in the second inning. Karin Tuk led off with a single and this time, Nathalie Timmermans connected for a 2-run homerun to double the lead. For both Britt and Nathalie, this was their second homerun in the tournament.

And so, the Dutch Team struck early and took an important quick and comfortable lead against Venezuela, which now faced a 4-run deficit in the second at bat. In that inning, Venezuela got its first two batters on base with a single, but then something rare happened, as all next three batters flied out to short to end the inning. Short stop Chantal Versluis has a busy afternoon, as she also made two flyouts in the next at bat and another one in the fourth, while finishing that inning with an assist on a groundout. In total, Chantal got 10 total chances in this game (6 putouts, 4 assists).

In the second inning, trailing 4-0, Venezuela changed pitchers and from that moment on, the Dutch offense was silenced, as nine batters were retired in order and 15 of the 16 batters who faced new pitcher Anyibell Ramirez. But then, an insurance run was scored in the top of the seventh inning when Nathalie Gosewehr homered with two outs to make it 5-1. Nathalie's homerun was the lone hit off Ramirez.

The Dutch Team turned a double play in the fifth inning, but in that at bat, rightfielder Areke Spel hurt her neck while going after a basehit and was replaced out of precaution. Lindsey Meadows took over the pitching in the sixth at bat. She gave up a lead-off basehit, then hit the next batter with a pitch. The runners then advanced on a passed ball, but Lindsey followed with a strikeout. A run was then scored on a grounder, but that was all Lindsey and the Dutch defense would allow. Lindsey finished with a strikeout, then gave up a lead-off single in the seventh, but three outs followed to secure the win.
