Dutch win big against Czechs

Nederlandse tekst

WHITEHORSE, Yukon (Canada) - On Sunday, the Dutch National Softball Team won big against the Czech Republic. After two scoreless innings, the Dutch opened the score, then took a 5-0 lead when Nathalie Timmermans hit a grand slam homerun in the fourth inning. The Czechs then scored twice, but the Dutch answered with four runs to win 9-2 in six innings.

All 66 games from the ISF XIII Women’s World Championship will be webstreamed live. Games will be recorded and archived for on-demand viewing as well. The games can be viewed on www.sportscanada.tv.

In the first three at bats, the Czech Team got on base more than the Dutch, who didn't reached base until the bottom of the third inning. Dutch starter Rebecca Soumeru gave up a lead-off single in the first inning, then another one with one out, but followed with two strikeouts. In the third, the Czechs, who are led by Dutch coach André Prins, added another basehit. Last year, Prins was the Head Coach of France during the European Championship in Italy.

In the home of the third inning, the Dutch Team opened the score. Karin Tuk led off with a single, the her pinch-runner Anne Blaauwgeers stole second and advanced on a sac-bunt by Nathalie Timmermans, then was eliminated in a rundown trying to score on a squeeze by Chantal Versluis. The latter moved to third on a wild pitch, then scored the first Dutch run on a single by Nathalie Gosewehr.

In the fourth, the Dutch broke open the game with two outs. Virginie Anneveld then singled and Areke Spel doubled. Next, Karin Tuk was given an intentional walk to load the bases and create a force play. But then, Nathalie Timmermans connected well, drove the ball into deep centerfield and hit a grand slam homerun to make it 5-0.

In the fifth inning, the Czechs scored twice off Rebecca Soumeru. The first three batters all singled, then a 3-2-3 double play followed, but a double accounted for two runs and made it a 5-2 score.

In the sixth inning, Lindsey Meadows took over the pitching and retired the side, including two strikeouts. In the first five innings, Rebecca had struck out six batters.

The Dutch Team then reached the 7-run difference in the home of the sixth. Saskia Kosterink led off with a single and Virginie Anneveld walked. Areke Spel then followed with an RBI-single and Karin Tuk added a 2-run double, but then was eliminated after overrunning the base. After a pitching change, Nathalie Timmermans and Chantal Versluis singled. After the two advanced on a grounder by Nathalie Gosewehr, a single by Meike Witteveen led to the final run, as the Dutch had taken a 9-2 lead to end the game.

The Dutch Team collected 12 basehits and all nine starters hit at least one.

As the game was played in the morning, the team was off in the afternoon and had the opportunity to do some sightseeing. Some of the players made a boatride on the Yukon River near Miles Canyon.
