Big win and No-Hitter Dutch Team against Argentina

Nederlandse tekst

WHITEHORSE, Yukon (Canada) - The Dutch National Softball Team won big on Saturday, July 14, as the squad shutout Argentina, 9-0 in five innings. After losing its opening game on Friday in 8 innings against China, the Dutch recovered fine and today belted nine basehits, including a 2-run homerun by Britt Vonk. Pitchers Lindsey Meadows (4 innings) and Femke van Dusschoten (1 inning) threw a combined No-Hitter.

All 66 games from the ISF XIII Women’s World Championship will be webstreamed live. Games will be recorded and archived for on-demand viewing as well. The games can be viewed on www.sportscanada.tv.

The Dutch Team was off to a good start against Argentina, scoring three runs in the first at bat. Nathalie Gosewehr led off the game with a single, then next batter Meike Witteveen reached on an error. With one out, the two advanced on an illegal pitch, then both scored when Saskia Kosterink followed with a double. Moments later, Saskia stole third base, then scored when a throwing error followed.

In the next inning, three more runs were added. Nathalie Timmermans led off with a single, then Chantal Versluis doubled. With one out, Nathalie scored when Meike Witteveen grounded out and then Britt Vonk drove the ball over the right-centerfield-fence for a 2-run homerun and lifted the lead to 6-0.

After leaving two runners in the third and being retired in order in the fourth, the Dutch Team scored again in the fifth inning. Saskia Kosterink led off with a walk and Virginie Anneveld singled. After the latter was replaced by pinch-runner Petra van Heijst, the bases got loaded when Areke Spel also walked. A wild pitch then enabled Saskia to score and Petra stole home plate when Karin Tuk's third strike was dropped, so the catcher had to throw to first base. Next, Nathalie Timmermans singled to bring in Areke and increase the lead to 9-0.

Dutch starter Lindsey Meadows encountered no problems in the four innings she pitched, as only one batter reached base off of her. With two outs in the second inning, Lindsey walked Maria Celeste Vega, but that was to be the lone Argentinian runner off of her. Lindsey struckout eight batters, five in a row and six of the seven batters she faced after giving up the walk. While Lindsey was pitching a No-Hitter, she was relieved after four innings by Femke van Dusschoten. With one out, Maria Eugenia Mallaviabarrena reached on an error in the fifth to become only the second baserunner for Argentina and lone one to reach third base on a grounder. But Femke then retired the next batter to end the game through the mercy-rule.
