Family-members surprise players after tournament

Nederlandse tekst

The players of the Netherlands National Softball Team got a big surprise on Friday, February 14, which of course is Valentine's Day.

Today, the team had a Valentine Tournament scheduled in Sporthallen Zuid in Amsterdam. The players of the National Team were divided into three teams and were joined by current and former players from the National Junior Team. The first of six games started at 10 AM and the tournament ended at 5:15 PM. Chantal Versluis accounted for two highlights by hitting two homeruns.

After completion of the tournament, the team had dinner together. Initially, the players were told that after dinner two play-off games were to be played to decide the Valentine Championship with the evening ending around 10 PM.

Instead, when the players returned to the hall after dinner, they received a surprise. While the players were having dinner, their family members got together outside the hall, then moved to the stands to await the players.

After the players were re-united with their families, the parents, siblings and friends played a game. Hereafter, they played a 3-inning game against the National Team with the players reversing their throwing and catching arms.

At the end, the players, coaches and staff members of the National Team were presented with a gift by the families. They got a heart-shaped present with a team photo wishing everyone lots of success for the upcoming World Championship, which will take place August 15-24 in Haarlem (Netherlands).

And so, a very original Valentine's Day ended with a lot of smiling faces.

A special thank you to umpires Harm de Fonkert, Albert Jung, Ponkey Rohan and Robin Stoevelaar and Official Scorer Jeanette van Drunen, who were the officials during the tournament.

Another thank you to Fred Versluis, who did the organisation with the families.

And now, let the photos tell today's story.
