Visit to MLB-game cancelled
Due to the weather conditions, the Netherlands National Softball Team had no activities today, besides having a joint dinner in the evening at Rumba.
The team had no games scheduled for today, but it was planned to attend the Major League Spring Training-game between the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees at Bright House Field in Clearwater.
However, due to thunderstorms (at one moment, even a tornado warning was issued), the start of the game (scheduled for 1:05 PM) was postponed.
A new starting time wasn't announced and it also was a possibility that the game would be cancelled.
It was decided not to go to the stadium, as an eventual new starting time would be too late for the team to attend, as it had a dinner-appointment at 5 PM.
And so, some of the Dutch Team-members decided to do some shopping or walk around in the afternoon.
When the skies cleared, the Phillies vs. Yankees game eventually started one hour and 26 minutes later, meaning the first pitch was delivered at 2:31 PM.
Recently signed Japanese Masahiro Tanaka was the starting pitcher for the Yankees and he threw three innings.
There were four homeruns hit in the game.
The Yankees took an 1-0 lead in the top of the 3rd inning when Ramon Flores homered, then the Phillies came alongside on a homerun by Freddy Galvis.
In the fifth inning, the Phils too a 3-1 lead when Carlos Ruiz and John Mayberry both homered.
In the seventh inning, the Yankees narrowed the deficit to 3-2 on an RBI-single by Adonis Garcia.
The Yanks then turned the game around in its favor in the eigth at bat by scoring twice on a double by Jose Pirela and a sacrifice fly by Ramon Flores to win 4-3.
Derek Jeter started the game at short stop for the Yankees and registered his first basehit of Spring Training and went 2-for-3.
The captain of the Yankees missed almost the entire last season due to injuries.
He recently announced his retirement and that this will be his final year in the Major League.
The game also saw the return of Yankee first baseman Mark Texeira, who missed the second half of last season due to an injury, followed by surgery.
Texeira played four innings today.
Five Major League-games in the area were cancelled today due to rain or field conditions.
After dinner, back in the hotel, the players watched video-images made of them during the three games played here in Clearwater.
The video-images are made by Elmy van Tok, who is with the team in Florida.
Video-analysis for the team is made possible thanks to the support of the Netherlands Olympic Committee (NOC*NSF).
And so, it was a somewhat relaxing day for the Orange team, which will return to the field on Friday to play a double-header against Hillsborough Community College in Tampa.
These games were added a few days ago to the schedule, which now has listed 25 games in 20 days.
The first game starts at 11 AM local time ((5 PM Dutch time).
