Nederlandse tekst

CLEARWATER, Florida (USA) - The Dutch National Softball Team on Saturday-evening won 3-2 vs. Towson University in an 8-inning tie-break game. The game started somewhat later than scheduled and Towson opened the score in the first inning. The Dutch came alongside in the second at bat.

In the eighth inning, Petra van Heijst hit a 2-out, 2-run single to give the Dutch a 3-1 lead. In the home of the eighth, Towson could add only one more run. MariŽlle Vleugels, who took over in the fifth, threw the last four innings and did fine.

The day started with a Meet&Greet at the Eddie C. Moore Sports Complex, where the players of the National Team met youth players, who were participating in a youth tournament at the site in Clearwater, which has nine softball diamonds.

The Dutch Team will conclude the American Tour on Sunday. The Team then meets the University of Maryland, starting at 1:30 PM local time (6:30 PM Dutch time).

Game vs. Towson University

Before the start of the game, the starting line-up had to be adjusted slightly, as Meike Witteveen, who was to start at 2B, had a light injury. Out of precaution, Meike was replaced in the starting line-up and didn't play in this game. 3B Virginie Anneveld, who got slighty injured a few days ago, also didn't play out of precaution.

In the first inning, the team threatened to open the score, but left two runners. With one out, Yonina Sint Jago reached on an error and Saskia Kosterink walked, but then two outs followed.

Towson then opened the score in its first at bat off Femke van Dusschoten, who got her second start of the trip. After coming back from an injury, she threw one inning in her first start some days ago and today, she went two innings. In the first, she gave up a lead-off single to Kelli Lyons, who then stole second base, moved on an one-out grounder and scored on a 2-out double by Brianna Jones. In the second inning, Femke retired the side.

The Dutch Team came alongside in the second inning. Lead-off hitter Petra van Heijst reached on an error, then stole second and third base. With one out, MarisŤla de Wind was hit by a pitch. Next, Merel Oosterveld followed with a sacrifice fly to score Petra, but it also resulted in the third out, as MarisŤla was thrown out, but the run had already scored.

In the third at bat, the Dutch Team got the bases loaded with one out, but couldn't score. Fabienne van Uden led off with an infield-hit and stole second base. Saskia Kosterink was then safe on a force play-grounder, which then result in an out. Fabienne and Saskia then moved when Areke Spel singled to load the bases. But hen, Karin Tuk grounded into a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning.

The Dutch Team got its next scoring opportunity in the seventh inning. Dinet Oosting led off with a walk, then her pinch-runner Anne Blaauwgeers moved on a sacrifice bunt by pinch-hitter Nathalie Gosewehr and stole third base. But Anne then stranded at third base.

Ginger de Weert took over the pitching in the third inning. The righthander gave up an one-out triple to Hailey Balk, but she then fielded a comeback-grounder and finished with a strikeout. In the fourth inning, she walked two batters with one out, but the Dutch defense prevented them from scoring.

MariŽlle Vleugels became the third Dutch pitcher in the fifth inning. The rookie did fine, as she retired 12 of the 14 batters she faced in the next four innings. MariŽlle started with a strikeout in the fifth to retire five in a row. She then gave up a 2-out single in the sixth, but finished with a strikeout. As she also retired the side in the seventh inning, the game went into extra innings.

The Dutch Team then struck with two runs in the eighth inning. Tie-break runner Fabienne van Uden moved the third base when an error was made on a grounder by Yonina Sint Jago. The bases were then loaded when Saskia Kosterink walked. After a strikeout, Fabienne was forced out at home on a grounder by Karin Tuk, but then Petra van Heijst followed with a single that enabled both Yonina and Saskia to score and gave the Dutch a 3-1 lead.

In the home of the eighth, Towson was able to get one run back and it was the same duo that accounted for the team's first run in the first inning, who did it again this time. Tie-break runner Kelli Lyons scored on a single by Brianna Jones, but then a grounder ended the game. And so, victory number 16 was in the books for the Dutch Team.
