Orange squad ends with two good games
The Netherlands Softball Team ended the trip the Chicago-area on Sunday, July 20 with two victories.
First, there was a comfortbable 5-0 win vs. Indiana Zephyrs hightlighted by homeruns by Nathalie Timmermans and Virginie Anneveld.
Later, the game against Chill Gold followed, which was won 5-3.
In this game, it was Areke Spel who homered.
On Monday, the team has the day off in Chicago and then the squad will start the journey home.
Beneath, Peter Schuler looks back again to the activities on day 20.
One more time a re-charge for a good ending of the trip.
Three consecutives weeks entirely focussing on softball with a lot of traveling is intensive.
Especially with hot and warm weather, as it was today.
Luckily, we didn't had to go en route that early and after the now known 45 minutes drive, we were back in Plainfield.
On special request, there was an additional batting practice and then on 12 PM, our first opponent: Indiana Zephyrs.
Another young, fanatic team.
Unfortunately for them, they faced a sharp Dutch Team, which had strong defensive leaders in Rebecca Soumeru (6 strikeouts, 1 hit) and Ginger de Weert (6 strikeouts, 1 hit).
Only two times, they got a runner on base.
And so, the shutout was a fact.
Offensively, we struck very quickly.
In the second inning, it again was Nathalie Timmermans, who delivered a towering homerun, followed by hits by Virginie Anneveld, Nathalie Gosewehr, Lindsey Meadows and Chantal Versluis: 4-0.
In the fifth inning, 'Vis' also hit the ball out of the park and so, the final score became 5-0.

The second game followed immediately against the team, which we narrowly beat a few days ago with a 4-3 score: Chill Gold.
And again, there was suspense.
Dagmar Bloeming (3 strikeouts, 2 walks, 3 hits) started and Femke van Dusschoten (4 strikeouts, 1 walk, 3 hits) took over in the fifth inning.
In the second inning, we took a 2-0 lead via hits by Saskia Kosterink, Virginie Anneveld and 'Timmie'.
In the third inning, Areke Spel led off with a long homerun: 3-0.
Unfortunately, the opponent came alongside in the bottom of the third via a few walks, an error and two hits.
In the sixth inning, we took charge of the game again when Merel Oosterveld batted in Areke and Saskia: 5-3.
And that was the final score.

Two victories on the final day of playing is a positive ending of a long, but tough campaign.
The players need a rest.
And we will not mention the staff.
Tonight, we all stayed 'at home' and had dinner in the hotel.
On Monday, we will travel to Chicago for some sightseeing.
But first, the washing of the uniforms and then start packing.
As we now also will bring home with us our new uniforms, the amount of extra bags has increased to 12.
How we will do that, we will see on Tuesday-morning, when we will load up and travel to O'Hare Airport.
But first, a day in Chicago.
