Another productive afternoon for Orange squad

Nederlandse tekst

After a resting period of one-and-a-half-day, the Netherlands Softball Team was back on the field on Sunday, July 13. The team had a double-header schedule against the U23-team of the BNGSA Angels. BNGSA stands for Bloomington-Normal Girls Softball Association. The Orange squad had another good day with the bat and won 8-4 and 11-3. Monday will be a busy day with a transfer to Joliet and a game against the local professional baseball-team in the evening.

Beneath, Peter Schuler looks back to the activities on Day 13 of the Illinois-trip.

Warm, hot and moist

In the night of Saturday/Sunday, there was a heavy rain shower. Accompanied with some thunder and so, we wondered how the field would look like. Soon, we received a phone call that we wouldn't play our games at the university, but at Champions Field, where we also played the last few days. Well organized!

So, we had a relaxed breakfats (we can have that somewhat later in the weekend) and then off to our vans. Wow, very hot outside!

Around 11:30 we were at the field and a noon, we started the warming-up.

The first game was pitched by Dagmar Bloeming and Eva Voortman. A good team this Angels-team and before we had noticed it, we were trailing 2-0. In the second inning, Dinet Oosting, who was behind the plate today, homered and made it 2-1. In the top of the third inning, the score became more comfortable thanks to hits by Chantal Versluis, Saskia Kosterink, Virginie Anneveld and Dinet Oosting: 4-2. Dagmar (9 strikeouts, 3 walks, 4 hits) gave up another run which made it 4-3.

In the fourth inning, Nathalie Timmermans hit a towering homerun with two runners on base: 7-3. In the fifth, 'Timmie' hit another one: 8-3. The run that Eva (1 strikeout, 1 walk, 3 hits) gave up in the seventh inning was one for the record. After more than two hours of playing an 8-4 win was in the books.

At 3:45, the second game started and this time, Ginger de Weert (3 strikeouts, 3 walks, 7 hits) and Femke van Dusschoten (5 strikeouts, 2 hits) led the defense. We took an 1-0 lead via Britt Vonk, but in the second inning, it became clear that the phanatic Angels wouldn't give up easy. They took a 3-1 lead due to some errors. A few innings later, we re-took the lead, but also needed some errors from the Angels: 4-3.

In the sixth inning, Britt Vonk hit a big homerun with Shareday Christina on base: 6-3. And in the seventh inning, five runs were added, highlighted by a homerun by Dinet Oosting: 11-3.

Thenk a quick return 'home', a shower and just in time at Bob Evans for a well-deserved dinner. Back in the hotel, we had the 'press conference' of Australia and a brief team-meeting by Head Coach Craig Montvidas.

On Monday, we will transfer to Joliet for the 'Battle of the Sexes'. We're anxious what thay will be!
