Day 1: First game on home soil|
SANTPOORT (Netherlands) - The Dutch National Softball Team was back on the field today, five days after returning back from their second monthlong American Tour. The team played the first game of the Holland Tour, which is a 3-game series to be played on three consecutive Sundays. Today, reigning Dutch champion Terrasvogels was the opponent, on the next two Sundays, the team meets the Holland All Stars in Groningen and Oldenzaal respectively. Today's game was the first by the national team on home soil. Before today, the squad had played 26 games in five American States (California, Hawaii, Pennsylvania, Illinois and Ohio) during their two trips. Initially, a tournament was scheduled to be played in the Netherlands in May, but unfortunately that had to be canceled due to organizational reasons.
Today's game was part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of Terrasvogels, one of the most successful teams in Dutch softball history.
Over the years, Terrasvogels produced a lot of national team-players, including players like Ludy van Mourik, Renée van den Berg, Gerjanne Treuren, Ineke Akkerman, Marjan de Vries, Ingeborg Cleeren, Diane Verhoef, Francis Handgraaf, Els Koks, Marinka Stuvel, Linda Landwehr, Sandra Nieuwveen, Anita Kossen, Nicole Wessels and Maaike Zijlstra, to name a few from the past, or Sandra Gouverneur, Judith van Kampen, Nina van Huissteden, Dana Horeman, Petra van Heijst, Dagmar Bloeming, Femke Haage, Nathalie Gosewehr, Linda Hoenderdos, Marieke Jansen and Kirsten Scheele in more recent years.
Last year, the team from Santpoort won its 14th national championship-title in club-history and its first since 2000.
Today, there was a lot of activity on Sportpark De Elta, the home site of Terrasvogels in Santpoort. There were youth-games, but also games that included former players like Ludy van Mourik, Marjan de Vries and Ingeborg Cleeren.
Before the game started, the club honored two players, who left the team after last season: pitcher Judith van Kampen and Sandra Gouverneur.
Judith played five seasons for Terrasvogels (2003-2007) and now throws for Sparks Haarlem.
Sandra played her entire 12 year big league-career for Terrasvogels (1996-2007), before going to Gryphons for this season.
Bert Wessels, the club's chairman, handed both players a present for their contributions to Terrasvogels.
Also honored was umpire Bert Loggen, who today was active in his last game of his long career.
Hereafter, former catcher Gerjanne Treuren threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
