Dutch squad no-hits Juniors

NIEUWEGEIN (Neth.) - The Dutch National Softball Team registered its ninth and tenth victory during the Holland Tour on Wednesday-evening in Nieuwegein, beating the Dutch Junior Team 6-0 and 7-1. In the opener, pitchers Femke van Dusschoten and Dagmar Bloeming threw a combined No-Hitter, in Game Two, three pitchers gave up four basehits. In the ten games played so far, the Dutch Team collected 99 basehits, meaning the 100th will be registered coming Sunday.

The next games in the Holland Tour will be played next Sunday, May 24, when the team will meet Twins, one of the eight teams from the Dutch Major League. It will be the fourth time during this series, that the Orange squad will face a big league-team, as Twins follows Euro Stars, Centrals and Gryphons. The first game of the double-header against Twins, which will be played on their site in Oosterhout, will start at 2:30 PM.

Game One: Netherlands vs. Dutch Juniors, 6-0

In the opener, Femke van Dusschoten made her first start and threw three hitless innings, facing nine batters. Dagmar Bloeming then completed the 5-inning No-Hitter by facing six batters in the remaining two at bats. The Dutch Juniors got only one batter on base, which was Rosanne de Vries in the first inning, who reached on a throwing error, but then was caught stealing. Femke and Dagmar each had two strikeouts.

The Dutch Team opened the score with two runs in the first inning. Meike Witteveen led off with a triple and scored on an one-out triple by Britt Vonk, who then scored herself when Areke Spel hit a single down the third base-line. The Dutch Team got its first two batters on base in the second inning, but then Anne Blaauwgeers lined out and the inning ended when a grounder by Meike Witteveen back to pitcher MariŽlle Vleugels ended in a rare double play in which first Nathalie Gosewehr was eliminated between third base and home, then Nadine Marinus was tagged out at third base.

Two runs were added in the third inning. First, Chantal Versluis reached on an error. Lefthander Eva Voortman then took over for Junior-starter MariŽlle Vleugels and struckout the first two batters she faced, but then walked Solange Starrenburg. Petra van Heijst followed with an RBI-single to make it 3-0 and the bases got loaded when Nathalie Gosewehr walked. The next run was then scored when Nadine Marinus was hit by a pitch, but three runners stranded.

The remaining two runs were scored in the fourth inning. With one out, Chantal Versluis doubled and scored on a single by Britt Vonk, who then advanced on a wild pitch and scored by beating a throw to home on a comeback-grounder by Areke Spel to the pitcher.

Game Two: Netherlands vs. Dutch Juniors, 7-1

In the second game, the squad of Head Coach Craig Montvidas again opened the score in the first at bat. Nathalie Gosewehr led off with a single, advanced on a following throwing error, stole third base and scored on a wild pitch.

A 4-run rally followed in the second inning. Annemiek van Riessen and Solange Starrenburg led off with singles, which put runners on the corners. After Solange stole second base, Petra van Heijst followed with an RBI-single. Solange then scored on a sacrifice bunt by Nathalie Gosewehr. Next, Meike Witteveen enabled Petra to score by hitting a double and scored moments later on a single by Virginie Anneveld. Another run was added in the third at bat when Annemiek van Riessen singled and went on to score on a throwing error that followed a single by Merel Oosterveld.

Trailing 6-0, the Dutch Juniors scored their lone run in the home of the third off Daisy Verstappen, who took over the pitching for starter Kirsten Scheele. Laura van Essen led off with an infield-hit and went on to score on a 2-out double by pinch-hitter MariŽlle Vleugels. The Dutch Team got the run back in the fourth when Nathalie Gosewehr led off with a triple and scored on a single by Virginie Anneveld. The first five batters on the Orange team reached base in this inning, but some fine defense by the Dutch Juniors resulted in two force outs at home and only one run. Ginger de Weert threw the fifth inning for the Dutch Team in this 5-inning game, gave up a lead-off double to pinch-hitter Nadia Bron, but then retired the next three batters.
