PRAGUE (Czech Republic) - The Dutch National Softball Team opened the European Championship in Prague on Sunday, July 7 with a 10-0 shutout-victory against Spain. The Dutch Team collected six basehits, including a homerun by Karin Tuk. The Spanish pitching added six walks. Dutch pitchers Dagmar Bloeming and Rebecca Soumeru each gave up one basehit in the two innings they pitched in this 3½ inning game. In the evening, the Opening Ceremony took place. On Monday, the Dutch Team meets Croatia, starting at 12:30 PM.

The Dutch Team set the tone against Spain in the first inning. In the top of the at bat, leftfielder Nathalie Gosewehr nicely covered during an overthrow, preventing a Spanish run. In the bottom of the at bat, the Dutch Team rallied for eight runs to decide the game.

Nathalie Gosewehr led off with a walk, then scored when Chantal Versluis followed with a double, which also led to a throwing error. Next, Britt Vonk's sacrifice bunt was misplayed, resulting in another run. Saskia Kosterink then added an RBI-single and Virginie Anneveld walked, then both scored on an one-out double by Dinet Oosting, who herself ws eliminated at third base, trying to advance. Next, Nathalie Timmermans singled and Merel Oosterveld walked and this time, Nathalie Gosewehr followed with a 2-run double in her second at bat in the inning. An error on a fly by Chantal Versluis enabled Nathalie score and make it 8-0.

Two runs were added in the second inning. Saskia Kosterink led off with a walk and then Karin Tuk homered with one out, lifting the lead to 10-0.

Starting pitcher Dagmar Bloeming walked a batter in the first inning. In the second at bat, she walked the lead-off hitter, then gave up a single. The two runners advanced on a sac-bunt, then a strikeout followed and the inning ended with a great running catch by rightfielder Merel Oosterveld.

André van Overbeek welcomed everyone, then Czech Federation President Gabriel Waage did the same. Tomáš Hudeček, the Mayor of Prague. also addressed the teams and the officials and thereafter, Van Overbeek officially opened the European Championship.
