Day 19: 35 Runs, 35 Hits, 2 Victories

WAIPAHU (Hawaii, USA) - On Sunday, the Dutch National Softball Team went to yet another part of Oahu Island, this time Central O'ahu Regional Park, or CORP, as it is better known by its abbreviation, which is located in the city of Waipahu, some 35 minutes drive from Honolulu. CORP is a nice location, which has a circle of four softball-fields, as well as four baseball-fields. And all field were occupied by teams from local High Schools or Colleges. The Dutch Team met Chaminade University of Honolulu, which plays its home games on this site. The Dutch showed their offensive strength in a double-header, winning both games, 9-1 and 26-0. Besides scoring 35 runs, the team also collected 35 basehits. Eight players hit three or more basehits on the day, led by Saskia Kosterink, who had five hits, including two homeruns, scored six runs and had four RBI's. Kim Kluijskens (double, triple), Marloes Fellinger (triple, homerun), Debby Connor (2 doubles) and Noémi Boekel all had four basehits, while Nathalie Timmermans (2 doubles), Petra van Heijst (double) and Chantal Versluis (double) all had three basehits. Besides hitting four hits, Marloes Fellinger scored six runs and had three RBI's. Debby Connor had five RBI's, while Petra van Heijst had four. Noémi Boekel and Nathalie Timmermans each scored four runs and had three RBI's. 14 of the 35 Dutch basehits were extra basehits, including four homeruns. Besides the mentioned Saskia Kosterink and Marloes Fellinger, Sandra Gouverneur also homered. The team now has hit eleven homeruns in the nine games played. After Kristi de Vries and Judith van Kampen went the distance two days ago, today Anouk Mels and Rebecca Soumeru pitched a complete game.

Box Score Game 1 of double-header vs. Chaminade University of Honolulu

In the opener vs. the Silverswords, Anouk Mels took a Perfect Game into the fourth inning, but with two outs, the Perfect Game, No-Hitter and Shutout all ended. The veteran lefthander retired the first eleven batters she faced, before pinch-hitter Skye Virtudes reached on an error with two outs in the fourth. Before reaching base, Virtudes had taken over the at bat, with an 0-2 count, of Brandi Sasaki, who had to leave the game after being hit by a foulball. Next, Melissa Harris followed with the first and lone Chaminade-basehit, enabling Virtudes to score her team's only run. Moments later, Harris was picked off first base by catcher Nina van Huissteden, the Anouk retired the side again in the fifth and last inning of this game.

After a flyout, Sandra Gouverneur also homered to make it 3-0.

Saskia Kosterink (or was it 'Sasakia'?) hit an one-out single, then Marloes Fellinger (who was 3-for-3) also singled, putting runners on second and third base. The two scored when Debby Connor singled through the middle.

In the fifth inning, Noémi Boekel led off with an infield-hit, moved on a sac-bunt by Jolanda Kroesen, then scored the last Dutch run in this game on a single by Daisy de Peinder, who made a nice defensive play in the second inning.

In the second inning, four runs were added. Saskia Kosterink led off with a single into left field, but was able to continue running and even score, because of two errors. Kim Kluijskens then doubled and Marloes Fellinger reached on an error, before Debby Connor delivered another RBI-single. A force play-grounder by Nathalie Timmermans resulted in another run, as did a sigle by Chantal Versluis.

The most productive at bat was the third in which not only nine runs were scored, but also a record was realized. After Marjan Smit led off with a single, Saskia Kosterink homered. With one out, six consecutive basehits were hit, including a triple by Marloes Fellinger, RBI-double by Debby Connor and RBI-singles by Noémi Boekel and Nathalie Timmermans and an RBI-double by Chantal Versluis. After a pitching change, Petra van Heijst singled, then a run was scored on a grounder by Marjan Smit. Next, Saskia Kosterink did something special and very unique by hitting her second homerun in the same inning. A feat which has not been accomplished before by a player in a game of the Dutch national team.

Winning pitcher Rebecca Soumeru struckout nine batters

In the fourth inning, six runs were added. In the inning, pinch-hitter (and pitcher) Judith van Kampen led off with a double, but later would be eliminated at the plate. With the bases loaded, a run was scored when pinch-hitter Dana Horeman walked. Hereafter, Petra van Heijst followed with a 2-run double, then a run was scored on a grounder by Marjan Smit. Saskia Kosterink then walked and stole second safely, as the throw went into the outfield, enabling Petra to score. Kim Kluijskens then barely missed a homerun, with the ball hitting the outfield-fence. She settled for a stand-up triple, enabling Saskia to score.

The last two runs were added in the fifth at bat on a wild pitch and sac-fly by Petra van Heijst.

By the way, today was 81 degrees Fahrenheit (a little over 30 degrees Celsius)!
