Dutch beaten in Round Two-opener!

SURREY, British Columbia (Canada) - The Dutch National Softball Team has started Round Two of the Canada Cup Tournament with a 6-1 loss vs. Team TFS International, one of the three qualified teams from the North American Division, the others being California Goldrush and California Activities. Because of the loss, the Dutch Team now will meet Venezuela for the third time during this event, playing against them on Saturday-morning at 10:30 AM. A victory would mean another game later in the afternoon and even a third game is possible when the second one is also won. In case the Dutch team is beaten by Venezuela it will be eliminated.

But there was more on Friday, as the All Star Team of this years Canada Cup was being named and our Virginie Anneveld (pictured left) was being named to it! Our congratulations of course go to Virginie. Three years ago, in 2006, when the Dutch Team last participated in the Canada Cup, outfielder Saskia Kosterink became the first Dutch player to be named to the All Star Team.
The All Star Team, which was picked based on games played during the preliminary round, looks as follows: Pitcher - Danielle Lawrie (Canada), Catcher - Lindsey Vandever (California Activities), 1st Base - Christie Nieto (Team TFS International), 2nd Base - Keli Leong (California Goldrush), 3rd Base - Virginie Anneveld (Netherlands), Short Stop - Natasha Watley (USA), Outfield - Alissa Haber (USA), Bree Evans (California Activities), Kristin Zacher (California Goldrush), Designated Player - Stacey Porter (Australia).

In today's game, the Dutch Team was put behind right away in the first at bat when Team TFS scored three runs. By the way, Lindsey Meadows, player of Dutch champion Computer SOS Tex Town Tigers, was invited to play for this team, while Michael Bastian, one of the coaches of the Chinese national team during last years Olympic Games in Beijing, was the Head Coach. Dutch starter Dagmar Bloeming gave up a lead-off single to Jessica Owens, then a fielder's choice grounder, a 2-run double by Jodie Legaspi and an RBI-single by Amanda Kamekona followed to make it 3-0. Later in the inning, Lindsey Meadows also singled and another single was added by Ashlynn Booker, but on this last basehit a runner was thrown out at home.

Two runs were added in the third inning when Jodie Legaspi (single) and Amanda Kamekona (walk) both scored on a single by Christie Nieto. The sixth run was scored in the fifth inning when Jodie Legaspi led off with a homerun. Legaspi was 3-for-3, scored three runs and had three RBI's.

The Dutch offense produced four basehits off starter Stephanie Royall, including one by Virginie Anneveld in the first inning, but she then was caught stealing. In the third, Solange Starrenburg led off with a walk and ended up at third base after a sacrifice bunt by Nadine Marinus and a grounder by Anne Blaauwgeers. Anne later left the game, as she twisted her ankle. Added to the injuries of Anne and Chantal Versluis were a painful toe for Saskia Kosterink and a hip-irritation for Dagmar Bloeming. By the way, all are minor injuries.

In the fourth, trailing 5-0, the Dutch Team scored its lone run. With two outs, Saskia Kosterink and Karin Tuk singled, then Saskia scored when an error was made on a grounder by Nathalie Gosewehr. In the fifth, Nadine Marinus led off with a single, which led to a pitching change. New pitcher Megan Elliott then got a flyout, before giving up a single to Meike Witteveen (pictured right) and a grounder to Britt Vonk that brought Nadine to third base, but she stranded there. In the sixth, Nathalie Gosewehr singled with two outs. In the seventh, also with two outs, Meike Witteveen (who was 2-for-4) and Britt Vonk singled, but then the inning and the game ended with a groundout.
