Day 8: Dutch Team open Olympics with loss!

BEIJING (China) - The Dutch Olympic Softball Team started the Olympic Softball Tournament in Beijing on a warm Tuesday with a 10-2 loss vs. host nation China. Trailing 5-0 in the fifth inning, Marloes Fellinger homered off a new pitcher to break a Perfect Game, as Chinese starter Yu had retired all 13 batters she faced. In the seventh inning, two Chinese batters homered off reliever Judith van Kampen. In the first four games being played today, ten (!) homeruns were hit, three by the USA, two by China and Australia and one each by Chinese Taipei, Netherlands and Japan. Today was a very warm and humid day, as it was 31 degrees Celsius, but because of some wind, it wasn't uncomfortable.

Also on Tuesday, the Dutch Olympic Team earned its fourth medal, as Elisabeth Willeboordse won bronze in judo under 63 kg.

The Dutch held China from scoring in the first four innings, but then an error led to a 5-run rally to give the host nation a comfortable lead. In the first three innings, China reached base frequently off Dutch starter Kristi de Vries but stranded two runners in each of these at bats. After leaving another runner behind in the fourth, China struck in the fifth inning.

With one out, Yanhong Yu reached on an error, then two singles followed to give China an 1-0 lead. The next batter grounded out, which would have meant the third out when the error wasn't made and also means that all five runs in this inning were unearned. With two runners on base, the bases were loaded by issueing an intentional walk, but then Li Sun hit a 2-run single to make it 3-0. Hereafter, Kristi was relieved by Rebecca Soumeru, who was greeted with a 2-run single, which increased the lead to 5-0.

In the sixth, China added a run, then rallied for four more in the seventh inning. Xia Pan and Li Sun then led off with singles, followed by a pop-out. Hereafter, Judith van Kampen was brought in as new pitcher, but gave up back-to-back homeruns. The first batter off Judith, Lifang Zhang, hit a 3-run homerun, then Yi Zhou followed with a solo-shot, making it 10-2.

After the first 13 Dutch batters were retired in order by starting pitcher Huili Yu, she was replaced by Qi Li, who faced Marloes Fellinger. On an 1-2 count, Marloes made an end to the Perfect Game, No-Hitter and ShutOut with one swing, as she belted a homerun. With two outs, Jolanda Kroesen singled and was replaced by pinch-runner Marjan Smit, who then stole second base. Sandra Gouverneur followed with a single, enabling Marjan to scored the second Dutch run. While it appeared (also on TV-replays) that Marjan missed home plate when she slid in, she did touch it.

In the sixth inning, Kim Kluijskens singled with one out, but stranded at first base. In the seventh, Jolanda Kroesen reached on an error with two outs and Sandra Gouverneur followed with an infield-hit, but then the inning and the game ended with a groundout.
