Only three Dutch basehits
The Netherlands National Softball Team played its second game in the 11 City World Championship Promo Tour this afternoon (Saturday, August 2).
At the site of Catch in The Hague, the Orange squad faced the Belgian Men Softball Team in a 7-inning game.
The Dutch Team was shutout 10-0 in a long 2½ hour game and registered only three basehits.
The team reached base frequently, but stranded 12 runners.
The Dutch Team appeared to off to a good start, as it got the bases loaded in the first inning off of (Dutch) pitcher Arjan Baanen, who went the distance for the Belgian squad.
The team was compiled mostly of players (Dutch and Belgian), who play for Belgian clubteam Brasschaat Braves.
With one out, Chantal Versluis walked.
Moments later, Britt Vonk was hit by a pitch on her lower-arm.
Luckily, the injury appears to minor, but out of precaution, she left the game.
With two outs, the bases got loaded when Dinet Oosting and Saskia Kosterink walked, as did Areke Spel with two outs.
But again, a flyout ended the inning.
In the sixth inning, the Dutch Team loaded the bases for the third time, but again the three runners were left behind.
With one out, Areke Spel singled, then, with two outs, Merel Oosterveld and pinch-hitter Karin Tuk both walked.
This time, a groundout ended the scoring opportunity.
In the seventh, Chantal Versluis led off with a double and another walk followed, but no runs were scored.
In the second inning, Merel Oosterveld had registered the first Dutch basehit.
The Belgian squad opened the score with two runs in the first inning off of starter Femke van Dusschoten.
With two runners on base and two outs, it was a double by Jan Zelenka, who accounted for the 2-0 lead.
A single run was added in the second inning, which ended with a nice Dutch double play.
Single runs were also added in the third and fourth inning, then Enrique Javier led off the fifth inning with a homerun off of Lindsey Meadows, who had taken over the pitching in the fourth at bat.
After the Dutch defense had turned its second double play, another run followed when two errors were committed.
With an 8-0 lead for the home playing Belgian team after 6½ inning, it already was decided in advance to play seven complete innings.
Dagmar Bloeming threw this inning, gave up two additional runs, but also struckout three batters, including the final one with the bases loaded.
We thank hosting club Catch in The Hague for organizing today's actitivities.
After the game, the players of both teams enjoyed a fine meal and luckily, the game could be played under fine conditions.
Rain was predicted, but the showers went by The Hague.
