Two Dutch pitchers throw No-Hitter
The Netherlands National Softball Team opened the 11-City-World-Championship-Promo-Tour tonight (Friday, August 1) with a big 19-1 victory against Germany.
The game was played at the site of Giants in Hengelo, where the hosting club did an outstanding job in organizing the opening game.
The game was visited by some 300 spectators.
The Dutch Team collected 17 basehits, including three by Areke Spel and Nathalie Gosewehr.
Dutch pitchers Ginger de Weert and Dagmar Bloeming threw a combined No-Hitter.
Today's game was the 150th official international game for Head Coach Craig Montvidas, who was honored before the game for this accomplishment.
Montvidas becomes the first National Team-coach to reach this milestone.
Initially, the German squad took an 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
With one out, Katerina Szalay reached third base on an errant throw, then scored on a following grounder.
But this was to be the lone German run.
After giving up the run, Dutch starter Ginger de Weert walked the next batter, but then retired the next seven in a row, including three strikeouts.
Dagmar Bloeming pitched the fourth inning, began with a walk, but then retired the next three batters.
The Dutch Team rallied for nine runs on seven basehits in the second inning to take a comfortable 9-1 lead.
The rally ended with five consecutive basehits, the last four of those being extra-basehits.
With Virginie Anneveld (walk) and Areke Spel (single) on base, the Dutch Team turned the 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead when Nathalie Gosewehr followed with a 2-run triple.
Later in the at bat, a wild pitch and back-to-back sacrifice flies by Nathalie Timmermans and Chantal Versluis increased the lead to 5-1.
Britt Vonk then singled and hereafter Saskia Kosterink (triple), Virginie Anneveld (double), Areke Spel (double) and Nathalie Gosewehr (double) all hit an extra-basehit to make it 9-1.
After adding a run in the third, three more were scored in the fourth inning, highlighted by a 2-run triple by Merel Oosterveld.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Orange squad scored six more runs to make it 19-1.
The final two runs in this at bat were scored on a double by Eva Voortman.
In the inning before, she entered the game as pinch-hitter and with that made her official international debut.
She singled in her first at bat, then added the 2-run double in the fifth.
Hereafter, Chantal Versluis walked and that also was the final action of the game.
The umpire crew came together and halted the game due to darkness.
The game had started 30 minutes later then scheduled, as part of the German squad got stuck in a traffic jam en route to Hengelo.
The opening game of the 11 City Promo Tour was well-organized by Hengelo-club Giants, whom we thank for their hospitality today.
