Dutch hold on vs. Australia

OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma (USA) - The Dutch National Softball Team on Friday-afternoon played another good game on Day 2 of the World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City, losing 6-1 to Australia, the bronze medal team from the Beijing Olympics. The Dutch took the lead, but trailed only 2-1 in the sixth inning when the Aussies rallied for four runs to decide the game. Dutch Umpire Rob Veldkamp officiated at third base in this game.

In the second inning, the Dutch Team opened the score when Areke Spel reached on an error, moved on a sacrifice bunt by Virginie Anneveld and scored on a 2-out double by Chantal Versluis. In the home of the at bat, Australia came alongside when Jodie Bowering homered with one out off starter Dagmar Bloeming.

Australia, where Belgian Brenda De Blaes (former player of Twins in the Dutch league) and pitcher Aimee Murch (currently playing in the Dutch league for Iber Lengua Terrasvogels) are on the roster, took over the lead in the third inning. With one out, Clare Warwick and Stacey Porter singled to put runners of first and third base. Next, Porter was caught stealing in a run-down, but that enabled Clare to score the go-ahead run. A walk and a single followed, but they eventually did no harm, as the Dutch defense eliminated another runner in a rundown.

Rebecca Soumeru took over the pitching in the fourth inning and threw two scoreless innings, but then gave up four runs in the sixth. Jodie Bowering led off with a single and advanced on a groundout. Next, Leah Parry grounded the ball towards first base where it was fielded by the Dutch defense ending in a very close play at first base. Safe or out? Australian umpire Kevin Broomfall decided the runner was safe and this put runners on first and third base. Hereafter, the Aussies started their rally. The two runners scored when Kylie Cronk followed with a double. Cronk then tried to score when next batter Brenda De Blaes singled, but she was thrown out at the plate on a strong throw by leftfielder Nathalie Gosewehr. Heareafter, Clare Warwick walked and then Stacey Porter (who was 3-for-3) added another 2-run double to make it 6-1. With runners on first and second base, Femke van Dusschoten was brought in to relief Rebecca and she threw only one pitch, resulting in a pop-fly to end the inning. Dutch 3B Virginie Anneveld made two spectacular catching attempts in this game, one on a line drive, the other on a foul ball.

The Dutch Team got two runners on base in the third inning with two outs, but were unable to score. In the fourth, off new pitcher Aimee Murch, Virginie Anneveld singled with one out, but stranded. In the fifth, Britt Vonk reached on an infield-hit with two outs, but was left at first base. In the seventh, two more batters reached base. With one out, Chantal Versluis reached on an error and with two outs Meike Witteveen singled, but a groundout then ended the game.
