ISF awards organization of World Championship to Venezuela
Nederlandse tekst
PLANT CITY, Florida (USA) - The International Softball Federation (ISF) has awarded the organization of the 12th World Championship Women Softball Fastpitch to Venezuela, where the event will take place in capital Caracas from June 23 through July 2, 2010.
The ISF announced the decision today in a press release, stating that it followed a trip by ISF President Don Porter to Caracas the week before.
There, Mr. Porter met with representatives of the government, including Sports Minister Victoria Mata, and also with Jesús Suniaga, the President of the Venezuela Softball Federation.
Next years event will mark the 45th anniversary of the first ever World Championship, which took place in 1965 in Melbourne (Australia).
It will also mark the first time that the event will be hosted in a country on the South American continent.
The previous eleven editions were held in Asia (4), North America (4), Oceania (2) and Central America (1).
The World Championship was originally awarded to the USA, where it was scheduled to take place in Oklahoma City in July, but due to a conflict of dates with the Central American & Caribbean Games in Puerto Rico, three teams (which qualified for the World Championship) would not have had the opportunity to participate.
Therefore, the ISF deciced to relocate the event to another site with new dates.
In the announcement of the relocation, it was initially announced that the championship was pushed back to a later date, but instead it was announced today that the event will take place earlier than initially scheduled, which might result in adjustment to national competion schedules, which already were planned and announced.
In today's release, it is stated that 'Mr. Porter said that the ISF was talking to three other potential new hosts before finally agreeing with Venezuela'.
These host-candidates were Whitehorse (Canada), Monterrey (Mexico) and Plant City (USA).
The Dutch National Softbal Team will participate for the tenth time in a World Championship, since making its debut on the global event in 1974 when the tournament was held in Stratford (Connecticut, USA).
