PLANT CITY, Florida (USA) - On Wednesday, January 6, the International Softball Federation (ISF) announced it has awarded the organization of the 13th World Championship Women Softball Fastpitch to Canada, where the event will take place in the city of Whitehorse (Yukon) in the month of July of 2012.
The exact dates will be announced later.
In today's press release, the ISF states that Whitehorse is an unique location, as it has over 20 hours over daylight, allowing games to be played on unlit fields and well into the evening hours.
Canada was the lone country to have filed a bid for the organization of the 2012 World Championship.
The announcement of the awarding to Canada as host of the 13th Championship in 2012 comes a little over two weeks after the ISF awarded the 12th edition of the World Championship to be held this year to Caracas in Venezuela.
With the naming of a site in 2012, it means that the World Championships will now be organized every two years, instead of the previous rotation of every four years.
This change was approved during the ISF Congress last October in Venezuela.
In 2008, the Men's Junior Softball World Championships also were organized in Whitehorse.
When the World Championship comes to Canada in 2012, it will mark the third time that this country organizes the event, the most by any country.
Canada staged the event earlier in 1994 (St. John's, Newfoundland) and 2002 (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan).
The games in 2012 will be played at the Pepsi Softball Centre (formerly Takhini Softball Complex).
