Day 28: No game today
AKRON (Ohio, USA) - The second monthlong American trip the Dutch National Softball Team made, ended on Saturday with rain, resulting in the fourth and final game against the Akron Racers to be canceled. It will not be made up, as the Dutch team travels back home on Sunday.
After the team had arrived at the field, dark clouds started to build around the stadium. A warning for severe thunderstorms was in effect.
Moments later, everyone had to leave the field, as the area was under a tornado watch. Some 10 minutes away from us, a tornado warning was issued.
At the stadium-area, it remained dark with a lot of wind, then heavy rainshowers followed. In the meantine, the field was covered.
In the basement of the stadium, players of the Dutch and Akron-teams remained in their lockerrooms, got some quick peaks at the weather situation.
While the clouds cleared a little later, it kept on raining.
It was then decided to return to the hotel to wait for further information concerning the game-situation.
Eventually, it was decided not to play the game, as storm-warnings remained effective.
So, our vans, our transport for our days in Akron, were returned, players and staff started packing their luggage and had the opportunity to relax a little, watch some TV, or just do nothing at all on the last night of our American trip.
On Sunday, the team first will travel by bus to Cleveland for the flight to Chicago, then it's off back home.
The Dutch National Softball Team now has a 3-game schedule ahead on own soil.
Next Sunday, the Dutch Team will play a game against Dutch big league-team and reigning national champion Terrasvogels, as part of that clubs 50-year anniversary. The game starts at 4:00 PM at Sportpark De Elta, the site of Terrasvogels in Santpoort.
Hereafter, two games will be played against the Holland All Stars.
On Sunday, July 6, the Dutch Team travels to Groningen to play them on the site of Caribe, which will then open a new field.
On Sunday, July 13, the Dutch Team meets the All Stars on the site of Run '71 in Oldenzaal, where a new field will be opened.
The team also will resume weekly practices on Sportpark Ookmeer, the site of Amsterdam Pirates.
Then, on July 23, the Olympic Team leaves for Japan where a Three Nations Tournament will be played in Sendai.
From there, the squad will travel to Beijing in China for the Olympic Games, which will open on August 8.
