Day 11: Team returns to the field
After a rainy night (it had started raining since our way back from New York yesterday-evening), the team was back on the field of ECTB Stadium in the morning for a conditioning session.
On a cloudy and humid day, Conditioning and Strength Coach Rob Oskam had set up a conditioning program, which lasted about two hours.
In the meantime, Coach Linda Wells worked with the pitchers and catchers.
In the evening, most players went back to the stadium to watch part of the first game of a 4-game series between the Philadelphia Force and New England Riptide. Playing for the latter are pitchers Erica Beach and Jocelyn Forest, who both played in the Netherlands in 2003. Erica Beach then pitched for Sparks Haarlem, while Jocelyn Forest was a member of DSC '74, which then won the Dutch national championship and was coached by Rob Walgien, who currently is one of the National Team-coaches. Catching for DSC '74 back then was Ellen Venker, who now is on the roster of the national team. In 2003, Jocelyn was named both Best Pitcher and Most Valuable Player of the Dutch big league. Erica was named Best Pitcher earlier in the year during the European Cup Tournament in Italy. The Riptide won the game, 5-1, and therefore ended Philadelphia's 4-game winning streak.
For the record:
At Yankee Stadium, the New York Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays and Yankee-short stop Derek Jeter's single in the third inning moved him past Mickey Mantle into third place on the All-Time Yankee hit-list. He is now only trailing Lou Gehrig (2721 hits) and Babe Ruth (2518).
