Day 9: Back on the field
After completion of the 4-game series against the Philadelphia Force, the Dutch Softball Team was back on the field on Monday-morning for a 2 1/2 hour practice at ECTB Stadium.
During the practice, several infield- and outfield drills were performed, as was also done with the pitchers and catchers.
In the afternoon, the team had off and for the first time since arriving here, we had the time to go to a shopping mall or look around.
Initially, today was to be a day off, but that has been switched with tomorrow, meaning today became a practice day. Tomorrow, the team travels to New York to look around in this famous city.
| For the record |
On today's date, June 2, in 1941, the legendary New York Yankees-player Lou Gehrig died at the age of 37, due to a fatal disease, which had been named after him 'Lou Gehrig's Disease' (or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, ALS).
Lou Gehrig played at first base for the famous Yankees from 1925-1939 and played in 2130 consecutive games, before he played his final game on April 30, 1939. He took himself out of the line-up, because he was feeling weak and didn't perform well. Gehrig never played another game, due to his fatal illness.
The record stood for 56 years, until Cal Ripken, Jr. of the Baltimore Orioles broke it in 1995.
Lou Gehrig, nicknamed 'The Iron Horse', still has the record for most grand slams hit in the Major League, being 23.
His lifetime batting average was .340 and he played in seven All Star Games.
In 1927 and 1936, Gehrig was named Most Valuable Player of the American League.
