Dutch photo the winner in ISF BackSoftball Photo Contest|
A photo of Dutch outfielder Saskia Kosterink trying to catch a ball during the Olympic Games in Beijing, made by Karin Tuk and Marian van Deursen, has been named the Overall Grand Champion winner in the International BackSoftball photo contest, which was organized by the International Softball Federation.
Amateur and professional photographers around the world were able to submit photos in six different categories (maximum of three entries per category) over the course of August, September, and October. A total of 440 pictures were submitted by either e-mail or air mail (on CD). Entries came from 13 different countries: Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, Philippines, Spain, United Kingdom and USA.
The winning photographs will be used throughout this year of the BackSoftball-campaign to illiustrate the desire for reinstatement on the Olympic Program in 2016. During the launching of the photo contest, ISF President Don Porter remarked: ,,Another positive and productive initiative in support of the BackSoftball campaign, good photographs make good stories better''.
It was possible to send in photos in six categories: Pitching, Hitting/Batting, Fielding, Sliding/Base Stealing, Crowd/Fan shots and Miscellaneous Player shots. The category that received the most entries was Miscellaneous Player Photos. The winners, who were announced by the International Softball Federation on December 8, came from seven of the 13 countries.
Marian van Deursen, herself a former player and coach of the Dutch National Softball Team, and softball-player Karin Tuk, were in attendance daily to watch all games of the softball-tournament during the Olympic Games in Beijing (China). In December, Karin Tuk (who plays for Computer SOS Tex Town Tigers) was one of 28 players named to the preliminary roster of the 2009 National Team and invited for practices. During one of the games of the Dutch squad in Beijing, the latter took a great photo of a leaping Dutch centerfielder Saskia Kosterink trying to catch a ball from preventing it to become a homerun. Marian's entry (she mailed several photos, including this one) not only won the first prize in the category Fielding, but also was named the Overall Grand Champion. The Overall Color Photo Champion came from the USA (Barry Parish) and received a miniature bat, while the Overall Black-and-White Photo Champion also went to the USA (Charlene Blumberg), winning a golden souvenir medal.
,,This is great'', Marian reacted when contacted by this site. ,,I just send in some photos we took during the Olympics. Photos of which I thought showed how wonderful and excited softball is.''
