Photo-shoot preceeds third indoor game

Nederlandse tekst

AMSTERDAM (Netherlands) - The Dutch National Softball Team played its third indoor game on Friday, January 27 in Amsterdam. The game lasted only three innings, as it was preceeded by a photo-session that took some two hours. The player's portraits were taken, as well as teamphotos and other 'relaxed' moments.

The Dutch Team will play its next indoor game on Friday, February 3, also in Amsterdam. Including coming Friday, four more indoor games are scheduled before the team leaves for its USA Tour to Tennessee and Florida on February 29. After returning from the States, the team have two more indoor games scheduled in March to conclude the third Tulip League-season and then moves outdoors for outdoor practices and games.

The day started with a photo-session, that was planned to take about an hour, but eventually lasted some two hours. First, portraits of the players and staff-members for official use were taken by KNBSB-photographer Rob Jelsma. During this series, a more relaxing individual photo was taken after the 'serious' one was made. Then, after conclusion of the portraits, it was time to make some additional relaxing and funny photos, either alone or in groups and some for private use only. Next, a series of teamphotos was on the schedule, including one that fits our theme for this season: 'on the right track'. The team handled the photo-shoot professionally and looked great!

After group-photos per position were taken, the photo-session was a wrap and then it was time to warm up for the third game in this years Tulip League. But as we took enough time to do the photo-shoot properly, the game started at 12:21, one-and-a-half-hour later than originally scheduled. And so, a brief 3-inning game was played, as we ended it at 1:07 PM, making it a 46-minute game. A special word of thanks surely have to go to today's umpires Hans Hornstra and Albert Jung, who patiently waited for the photo-shoot to finish. While doing so, they had time to exchange some thoughts with each other, as both are also members of the Rule Committee. For Albert Jung, this was his tenth indoor intersquad-game involving the Dutch National Team, becoming the first umpire to reach this total.

A mentioned in the recap of last week's game, the first Tulip League began in November 2009 when two teams were formed weekly, being called Team Black and Team Grey. In the first season (November 2009-February 2010), ten games were played. In the second season (January-March 2011), six games were played. In the current third season, three games have been played so far, with six more scheduled. A pre-Tulip League-season took place in February 2009, when three intersquad games were played, but not between a Team Black and Team Grey. On January 21, 2011, five mini-games were played with all players wearing a grey shirt. Since February 11, 2009, the Dutch National Softball Team played a total of 23 indoor games, including 19 in the Tulip League. In those 23 games, 14 umpires have so far participated, whom we all thank again for their support during these games.

In today's 3-inning game, four basehits were hit and one run was scored. Team Grey (which today played in the orange game-uniforms) won 1-0 vs. Team Black (which played in the blue game-uniforms). The lone run was scored in the top of the second inning. Dinet Oosting led off with a walk, was awarded second base after an illegal pitch, stole third base and scored on a single by rookie Laura van Essen, which was her first indoor-basehit. Meike Witteveen was 2-for-2 for Team Grey, while Fabienne van Uden, who celebrated her birthday today, accounted for the lone Team Black-basehit.

Defensively, there were some nice plays, including one by short stop Chantal Versluis in the first inning on a hard liner by Nathalie Gosewehr, resulting in a force play. Another nice started when short stop Petra van Heijst caught a line drive by Yonina Sint Jago, which led to a double play in the third inning. And there was a nice foul-fly catch by catcher Anne Blaauwgeers in the second inning.

After the game, a conditioning program was conducted again. Strength and Conditioning Coach Vaughn Robinson, who is working for Major League Baseball-organization Arizona Diamondbacks, was joined today by Physical Therapists Ingrid Holstege and Annelies van Asch. The latter is new this season in the medical staff of the Dutch National Softball Teams. Annelies takes over from Anouk Fermont, who this year is less available due to study.

And now, enjoy the 'making of...' of the photo-shoot, followed by some game-photos.
