Nederlandse tekst

AMSTERDAM (Neth.) - On Sunday, February 7, Team White became the first team to clinch a spot in the Championship Game of the first Right To Play Future Stars Indoor Softball Tournament. The day and the tournament ended with Team White facing Team Orange in the all-deciding final. Team White won 7-1 to become the first winner of the 2-day event.

After completion of the final, all players and spectactors were invited into the VIP-room of Sporthallen Zuid in Amsterdam for attending the Award Presentation. Two players of Team White captured three individual awards. Laura Treurniet was the Batting Champion and also was named Best Pitcher, while Kimberly Jones was named Most Outstanding Player. Marisèla de Wind of Team Orange was named Most Valuable Player of the Future Stars Tournament. The individual awards were handed out by Frits Mulder, who is a member of the Board for the Royal Dutch Baseball and Softball Association.

Head Coach Craig Montvidas closed the event by thanking everyone involved in the realisation of this tournament, specially naming Team Manager Paul Boonstra, Media Officer Marco Stoovelaar and Harumi Ueda of the Head Office of the KNBSB, who all did a lot of work during the preparations in the weeks leading up to the event.

And now, let's continue with the lookback to the second day of the event, with brief recaps of the remaining seven games, including Box Scores and Photos.

Game 7: Team White vs. Team Blue, 3-2
Team White won its fourth game, beating Team Blue 3-2, but officially the final score was 3-0, as Team Blue scored its two runs in a not-completed inning. Winning pitcher Loes van der Vliet gave up four hits, while her teammates collected eight basehits off Chantal Kradolfer, including two by Dinet Oosting and Rosanne de Vries.

Team White scored two runs in the second inning. Dinet Oosting and Laura Treurniet led off with singles, then advanced on a grounder by Cindy van der Zanden and both scored on a double in rightfield by Laura van der Bos. Laura later advanced to third base and Kimberly Jones walked with two outs, but then a grounder ended the at bat. The third run was added in the third inning. Rosanne de Vries led off with a double and then scored when Dinet Oosting followed with a single. Dinet advanced on a grounder, then stole third base, but then was thrown out at the plate on a throw from leftfielder Laura Bakker to catcher Miranda van der Ham. In the fourth inning, Team White got two more runners on base with two outs, when Kim Buizer and Rosanne de Vries singled, but the inning ended when the first was called out for leaving second base too early.

Team Blue got on base frequently in the first three innings, but was unable to score. In the first inning, Eva Voortman led off with a bunt-single, but stranded on third base. In the second inning, Laura Bakker (fielder's choice-stolen base) was on second base when Gini Ketelaars singled, but both were left behind. In the third, Lueji Petchkovsky Morais singled with two outs, but ended up on second base. Team Blue then did score twice in the fourth at bat and came very close in tying the game, but ran out of time. With two outs, Gini Ketelaars doubled, then the bases got loaded when Eva Voortman and Rebecca Duindam walked. Gini and Eva then both scored when an error was made on a force play-grounder by Noëmie Brandjes. With runners on first and second base and the time-limit approaching, next batter Lueji Petchkovsky Morais was pitched around and got a walk, which not only loaded the bases, but also meant the end of the game, as the 60-minute mark was reached. As a result, the inning wasn't completed, meaning the two runs were annulled for the official final score.

Game 8: Team Red vs. Team Orange, 1-0
Team Red reached base 10 times, but scored only one run and that was all they needed to win this game. In the second inning, the team reached base with two outs when Jessie van Aalst walked and Floor van Dijk was hit by a pitch, but the two stranded on second and third base. In the third at bat, Daphne Endlich and Debby Barbé led off with singles, then moved on a grounder by Lynn Dollekamp. Next, Daphne was eliminated at the plate on a grounder by Nadia Bron, followed by the third out in the inning.

In a productive fourth inning, Team Red scored its run, then got runners on second and third base twice, but both times, the lead runner was eliminated at the plate. Jessie van Aalst led off with a walk, as did Eliza Rikkelman with one out. After the two advanced on a wild pitch, Jessie scored on a single by Daphne Endlich. With Eliza on third base, Daphne stole second base, then the first was thrown out at the plate on a grounder by Debby Barbé. This time, Daphne was on third base, when Debby stole second base and the time-limit was reached during the at bat of next batter Lynn Dollekamp. According to the tournament rules, a batter had to be finished when the time-limit is reached. So, now trailing 1-0, pitcher Marisèla de Wind was ordered to throw the ball as low as possible, hoping Lynn would reach on a walk to load the bases and ending the game at 0-0 (intentional walks were not allowed). Marisèla threw the ball twice almost over the ground, but Lynn managed to hit the second delivery, which ended up in a sliding Daphne being tagged out at the plate to end the inning and the game and giving Team Red an 1-0 victory.

Team Red-pitcher Marjolein Merkx threw an one-hitter, giving up only a basehit to Marit van Vulpen in the third inning after having retired the first seven batters (four strikeouts) she had faced. With two outs in the fourth inning, Team Orange got two runners on base when Mariëlle Vleugels walked and Marisèla de Wind reached on an error. But then, the inning ended when Marjolein Merkx struckout her seventh batter of the game.

Game 9: Team White vs. Team Red, 5-0
Team White remained unbeaten and raised its record to 5-0, thanks to a 5-0 shutout vs. Team Red. Winning pitcher Laura Treurniet pitched a 5-inning 3-hitter to win her third game of the tournament. Offensively, Laura contributed with two basehits, as did Kimberly Jones.

Team White opened the score in the second inning. Dinet Oosting led off with a single, advanced on a wild pitch and stole third base with one out, then scored when Cindy van der Zanden reached on an error. The second run was added in the third at bat. This time, Kimberly Jones led off with a single, moved on a grounder by Loes van der Vliet and a passed ball and scored on a grounder by Rosanne de Vries.

A 3-run rally followed in the fourth inning to make it 5-0. Laura Treurniet led off with a single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Cindy van der Zanden and a wild pitch. Next, Jasmin Carlson walked. An error on a grounder by Merel Groenveld then led to a run and Kimberly Jones followed with a 2-run single to make it 5-0, but then two strikeouts followed to end the inning.

Team Red came close to a run in the second inning. Nadia Bron and Marjolein Merkx singled, but the first was forced out on a grounder by Floor van Dijk and then a double play followed on a grounder by Deion van der Voort. In the third and fourth inning, the lone runners in these at bats were caught stealing.

Game 10: Team Blue vs. Orange, 3-0
After four losses, Team Blue won its first game of the tournament, handing Team Orange a 3-0 shutout-loss in a 6-strikeout, No-Hitter by Eva Voortman. The lefthander allowed only one player of Team Orange to reach base. After having retired the first nine batters she faced, Eva walked Beau van Gelder to start the fourth inning.

Team Blue opened the score in the first inning. With one out, Miranda van der Ham reached on a throwing error by pitcher Mariëlle Vleugels, who then had to be replaced due to an injury. She initially remained in the batting order, but later had to leave the game during her first at bat. With that, Team Orange got a fourth injured player on its roster. On the first day, it lost pitcher Femke Duffhues, then after completion of the first day, infielder Suzanne Meiring injured her finger and was unable to play on Sunday. On the second day, catcher Cheryl Hiele had to be replaced in the game against Team Red when she injured her pinky in a tagging play at third base. And now, it had to put Mariëlle Vleugels on the disabled list, meaning it also ran out of players. Taking over for Mariëlle in the batting order was Laura Bakker, who was added from Team Blue. Taking over as pitcher was Marisèla de Wind, who was brought in from centerfield.

After Miranda van der Ham had stolen second base, Rebecca Duindam walked. The two then advanced on a double-steal and Myrthe Smid followed with an RBI-single, but Rebecca, who also tried to score, was thrown out at the plate on a nice throw from leftfielder Shadeney Castillo to catcher Stephanie Ruiter. Next, Lueji Petchkovsky Morais followed with a triple to deep centerfield (the lone triple of the tournament), which brought in Myrthe. The third run was scored in the fourth inning. Chantal Kradolfer was hit by a pitch, advanced on an one-out grounder by Eva Voortman and scored on a single by Rebecca Duindam.

Game 11: Team Orange vs. Team White, 6-2
Fill-in players Malou van Dusschoten and Laura Bakker played an important role in this game for Team Orange, which handed Team White its first loss of the tournament after five victories. With the victory, Team Orange became the second finalist in which it would face Team White again. After its roster had been reduced to eight players due to four injuries, Laura Bakker of Team Blue was with the team again for this game. Also joining the team was pitcher Malou van Dusschoten, who had been a member of the preliminary roster of the Dutch National Softball Team earlier this year and was in Amsterdam as a spectator. Malou struckout four batters and threw a 3-hitter, while Laura reached base three times, scored a run and batted in the first run for the game-winning RBI.

Team Orange scored its first two runs with two outs in the first inning. Marit van Vulpen then walked and Marisèla de Wind singled, bringing Laura Bakker to bat. Laura then singled to bring in Marit for the first run. Next, Marisèla scored on an error when Laura advanced to second base on the throw towards home after her single. Hereafter, the bases got loaded when Ardine Schemmekes walked and Shadeney Castillo was hit by a pitch. But the inning ended, when Ardine was ruled out for interference on a hit by Malou van Dusschoten.

The lead was doubled in the third inning. Marisèla de Wind led off with a walk and Laura Bakker singled. Marisèla then scored on a wild pitch and Laura on an one-out single by Shadeney Castillo.

Team White got two runs back in the home of third. With two outs, Dinet Oosting (fielder's choice) was on first base when Laura van der Bos singled. The two then scored when Laura Treurniet followed with a 2-run single.

Team Orange scored two more runs in the fourth inning. Beau van Gelder led off with a walk and moved to third base when an error was made on a sacrifice bunt by Kiki Draaijer. Beau, who by the way is the niece of Dutch National Team-player Nathalie Gosewehr, then scored on a single by Marit van Vulpen. A single by Marisèla de Wind then accounted for the next run, but when next batter Laura Bakker was hit by a pitch, the time-limit was reached, meaning the official final score was 4-2.

Game 12: Team Red vs. Team Blue, 13-0
The round robin in the Future Stars Tournament ended with a big 13-0 shutout-win for Team Red vs. Team Blue, resulting in Team Red finishing in third place and Team Blue in fourth. Team Red collected 12 basehits off four pitchers, including three by Nadia Bron and Sophie Bugter, while Daphne Endlich had two. Daphne and Sophie each had three RBI's and Sophie also scored three runs. Winning pitcher Deion van der Voort threw a 2-hitter, giving up two singles to Myrthe Smid.

Team Red rallied for six runs in the first inning in which starting pitcher Shomayra Franka gave up singles to Daphne Endlich and Nadia Bron, an RBI-single to Jessie van Aalst and an RBI-double to Sophie Bugter. Two other runs were scored on basesloaded walks for Lisanne Korringa and Daphne Endlich, while the remaining two runs were the product of an error on a hit by Debby Barbé.

Three runs were added in the second inning. Jessie van Aalst led off with a walk, moved on a single by Nadia Bron and scored on a single by Sophie Bugter. With one out, Nadia and Sophie (who both were 3-for-3) scored on a 2-run single Eliza Rikkelman to make it 9-0.

Four more runs were scored in the third inning. Debby Barbé led off with a single and stole second base, then was replaced by pinch-runner Floor van Dijk, who went on to score on a double by Nadia Bron, who scored herself on a single by Sophie Bugter. The bases got loaded when Lynn Dollekamp singled and Eliza Rikkelman walked. With two outs and after the entrance of the fourth pitcher, Sophie and Lynn then scored on a single by Daphne Endlich to make it 13-0.

Game 13: Team White vs. Team Orange, 7-1 (final)
Team Orange could not repeat what it had done two games before and this time was beaten by Team White, which therefore became the first winner of the Right To Play Future Stars Indoor Softball Tournament. Team White was led by Flex Coach Marjan Smit, who also led her team to the tournament victory in the International Indoor Cup in January in Schiedam. Laura Treurniet struckout five and gave up four hits in winning her fourth game of the event. Team White got eleven basehits off Malou van Dusschoten, who again pitched for Team Orange. Three of these hits were hit by Laura Treurniet, while Rosanne de Vries, Laura van der Bos and Loes van der Vliet each had two.

After two scoreless innings, Team White scored three runs with two outs in the third inning. With one out, Laura Treurniet reached on an error, then scored on a 2-out single by Laura van der Bos. After next batter Cindy van der Zanden walked, Laura scored on a single by Loes van der Vliet. Moments later, Cindy scored in a steal-situation.

In the fourth inning, Rosanne de Vries singled with one out, advanced to third base on a double by Laura Treurniet and scored on a grounder by Laura van der Bos. Two runs were added in the fifth inning. Loes van der Vliet led off with a single and Rosanne de Vries doubled with two outs. The two then scored when Laura Treurniet hit her second double of the game.

After stranding two runners in scoring position in the fourth inning, Team Orange scored its lone run in the sixth inning. Myrthe Smid, who was added to the team from Team Blue, singled with one out, moved on an infield-hit by Stephanie Ruiter and scored on a 2-out single by Ardine Schemmekes. Team White got the run back in its sixth at bat when Laura van der Bos led off with a single, moved on a passed ball and scored on a single by Cindy van der Zanden, which also marked the end of the game, as the 75-minute mark for the final was reached.

By the way, all injuries of the Team Orange-players were minor.
