ENSCHEDE / HAARLEM (Neth.) - In the weekend of April 3-5, 21 of the current 23 players on the preliminary roster of the Dutch National Softball Team participated in two international tournaments, being held in Enschede and Haarlem.
For them and their respective clubteams, it were the last preparations for the upcoming regular season, which opens on Saturday, April 11.
At Enschede, 19 players participated in the 27th edition of the J.C.J. Mastenbroek Tournament, appearing in games for Dutch champion Computer SOS Tex Town Tigers, Sparks Haarlem and Terrasvogels.
Besides these 19, seven other players who were of last years Dutch Team Roster also participated in the event.
Host Tex Town Tigers was the winner of the tournament, which also included Czech champion SK Joudrs Praha and German champion Hamburg Knights.
Nathalie Gosewehr was the Batting Champion in Enschede.
Nathalie batted .667 (8-for-12) and also led the tournament with six Runs Scored and eight Basehits. On the photo at right, Nathalie gets her award from Tournament Director Jan van der Molen.
Former national team player Kim Kluijskens led with seven Runs Batted In.
Participating in the event were:
Playing for Tex Town Tigers (first place): Virginie Anneveld, Petra van Heijst, Nadine Marinus, Merel Oosterveld, Areke Spel, Karin Tuk, Britt Vonk, Ginger de Weert and Meike Witteveen.
Playing for Sparks Haarlem (second place): Dagmar Bloeming, Judith Diepeveen, Saskia Kosterink, Kirsten Scheele, Rebecca Soumeru, Chantal Versluis and last years national team-players Noémi Boekel, Debby Connor, Marloes Fellinger, , Kim Kluijskens and Jolanda Kroesen.
Playing for Terrasvogels (third place): Nathalie Gosewehr, Shannah van der Kaaij, Annemiek van Riessen, Solange Starrenburg and last years National Team-player Dana Horeman. The team also included three other players who were on Dutch National Team rosters in the past: Femke Haage, Linda Hoenderdos and Lyanne Horeman.
National Team Head Coach Craig Montvidas and Team Manager Paul Boonstra visited the tournament, while the team's Media Officer Marco Stoovelaar was one of the Official Scorers of the tournament in Enschede.
At Haarlem, two players currently on the roster and one of last years team participated in the 22nd edition of the Jan de Wit Tournament, organized by Olympia Haarlem.
The tournament was won by DSS, which shutout Gryphons 1-0 in the final of the game.
Gryphons was coached by Mary-Ann Hatt, who last year was a member of the coachingstaff of the Dutch National Team.
Besides six Dutch teams, two German squads were participating: Mannheim Tornados and Neunkirchen Nightmares.
Participating in the event were:
Playing for Euro Stars (third place): Daisy Verstappen and last years National Team player Ellen Venker.
Playing for Centrals (fourth place): Anne Blaauwgeers.
Also participating in this event were several players who have been members of Dutch rosters in the past, including Maaike van Aarle, Amber Dammers (both Centrals), Shulaika Balentina, Bianca Hageraats, Anouk van den Heuvel, Manon Schol (all Euro Stars), Britt Breure (Gryphons) and Sonja Pannen (DSS).
The only two players on the current preliminary roster not participating in one of these events were Richelle van Gennip and Nathalie Timmermans, who both are studying and playing in the USA.
