Day 11: Rain, rain, rain

DAVIS (California, USA) - Heavy rain forced the third game of the Dutch Women Softball Team on the second day of the Davis Invitational Tournament to be stopped in the fourth inning and resulted in the cancelation of the next one. The games will not be made up.

In the morning, the University of California Davis shutout California State University Bakersfield, 8-0, then Providence came back from behind to win 2-1 vs. Davis, tying the score in the sixth and winning it in the seventh inning.

With a chilly temperature (it was 50 degrees Fahrenheit - appr. 10 Celsius - a game time), the Dutch team then started their game against Providence College under a clouded sky and a little drizzle of rain. But during the game, it started to rain harder, making both the ball and the field starting to get slippery. In the first inning, Marloes Fellinger lined a homerun to centerfield for the Dutch squad, but in the home of the fourth inning, with the Dutch batting, Home Plate Umpire Jennifer Smith called the two Head Coaches and her colleagues Kenny Buchmiller and Tim Altheide with her to discuss the weather situation. As more rain was expected, it was decided to halt the game and put the tarp on the field for protection. But five minutes later, the game was definitively stopped, as it rained heavier and it would probably do so the entire day. As a result, the remaining schedule for the day, meaning the completion of the Dutch game vs. Providence and the Dutch match-up against Davis were scrubbed and will not be made up. Last year, the national team of Chinese Taipei visited Davis and also saw their game being rained out, playing only one inning.

As soon as possible after the cancelation, the team returned back to their hotel in Emeryville, as a severe storm also was predicted for the evening hours in the Davis-area. In about an hour, the team was back 'home' in Emeryville, where they had the remainder of the day off. The next game for the Dutch squad is scheduled for next Tuesday when they will meet the University of California Berkeley.

But things will get better again in the coming days. Forecasts state that the weather will improve starting on Monday-morning with more sun, so better circumstances to play and practice. The team will be back in action soon!
