Dutch eliminated by Venezuela!

SURREY, British Columbia (Canada) - The Dutch National Softball Team on Saturday was shutout 7-0 by Venezuela and as this was the second loss in the Championship Round (double elimination) of the Canada Cup Tournament, it meant elimination for the Dutch squad. The Team now will look on Sunday to the final games to see how the other teams are doing on the last day of the Canada Cup Tournament, which, as always, was organized wonderfully. The players and staff of the Dutch Team again enjoyed participating and give a big thank you and compliments to the organization, but specially to host family Marilyn and Walter Adams. They were great! And of course, also another great thank you to Imaara Lavji, our bat-girl during the event. The Dutch Team surely will return to the Canada Cup, probably already again next Summer.

In today's game, the third confrontation during this event with Venezuela, the young Dutch Team was unable to turn the game around again in its favor. During the preliminary round, the Dutch Team defeated Venezuela 3-1 and 4-2. But this time, it was Venezuela that controled the game. Pitching ace Mariangee Bogado, who left after three innings in the previous match-up between the teams, now went the distance and gave up only two basehits, a single by Nathalie Timmermans and a double by Nathalie Gosewehr. Venezuela collected seven basehits off Rebecca Soumeru, who dominated in the first outing vs. Venezuela.

After the first three Dutch batters were struckout by Mariangee Bogado in the first at bat, Venezuela opened the score in its first inning. Maria Soto led off with a double, advanced on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly by Yurubi Alicart.

Two runs were added in the third inning when the Dutch defense committed two errors. Hernanza Ruiz led off with a walk and Maria Soto singled with one out, then an error followed on a grounder. A sacrifice fly by Yurubi Alicart then resulted in a run, followed by a runscoring error.

The 7-run difference was reached in the fifth inning when Venezuela scored four runs, all with two outs. With two outs and a runner on first base, an error was made, making it 4-0. A single by Rubilena Rojas then produced two more runs and moments later, she scored the seventh run herself to end the game.

The Dutch Team got on base for the first time in the second inning. With one out, Karin Tuk walked and Nathalie Timmermans (pictured left) followed with a single to put runners on first and second base. But then a strikeout and groundout followed.

In the third inning, Nathalie Gosewehr (pictured right) led off with a double, but then was tagged out by the pitcher moments later in a following play. Another Dutch batter reached base in the top of the fifth inning when Nadine Marinus was hit by a pitch with one out. She also stranded, as this time a strikeout and flyout followed.

Of course, there was dissappointment afterwards regarding the results, but a lot of things were learned during this tournament, which had a strong field of participants. And of course, there were also highlights, being the victories against Venezuela and several individual performances. This, for instance, led to the election of Virginie Anneveld in the tournament's All Star Team.

On Sunday, the team will be off on the final day of the Canada Cup. But it also will be a day of packing, as the team will travel to Oklahoma City (USA) on Monday for the next strong tournament on the agenda, the World Cup of Softball. There, the squad of Head Coach Craig Montvidas again will meet Australia, Canada and the USA, but also will play against Olympic champion Japan and reigning European champion Italy. In Oklahoma City, Media Officer Marco Stoovelaar will join the team again (looking forward seeing you all again!). He was unable to travel to Canada (heavy sigh), due to working commitments during the Baseball World Port Tournament in Rotterdam in the same period.

After returning from Oklahoma, the Dutch Team will have one day off at home and then will continue its international season by traveling to Valencia in Spain for the European Championships. And that will be the most important event on this years calender for the national squad. In Valencia, the supporting staff will be complete, as Business Manager Rich Hooff then also will join the team. Currently, Rich is coaching the Little League Softball Team, hoping to qualify for the Little League World Series. Good luck, Rich!
